Hi everyone!!

ADHD is a neurodevelopment condition that affects individuals of all ages and genders. Women with ADHD often face unique challenges, and many find themselves receiving a diagnosis later in life, myself being one of them!!.

If you're a woman who has recently been diagnosed with ADHD or suspect you might have it, you're not alone. It's been incredibly challenging and eye opening, but also a really beautiful experience getting to know my brain and accepting it the way it has always been. Learning how to work with my ADHD instead of against it, not focusing on what my life or career would look like if I got support during education. I am simply here just trying to do my best.

This blog post aims to shed light on the journey of women with late ADHD diagnosis, offering insights, understanding, and practical advice to help you navigate this new chapter. This is taken from my own experience but also knowledge I have gained from research and also speaking to other women with late diagnosis ADHD

The Hidden Struggle: Why now?

ADHD in women often presents differently than in men, which contributes to its underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. Rather than displaying hyperactivity, women with ADHD might exhibit symptoms such as internal restlessness, daydreaming, disorganization, and difficulty focusing. This unique manifestation can lead to years of challenges in various aspects of life, including education, career, relationships, and self-esteem. Not to mention, the diagnostic criteria was design in how ADHD presents in boys and only in recent years have we really learned how ADHD presents in girls. Looking back there were many many signs but my parents and teachers simply didn't know.

The Impact of Late Diagnosis

Receiving a late ADHD diagnosis can be both validating and overwhelming. It explains the struggles you've faced but might also raise questions about missed opportunities and the path ahead. While a late diagnosis can bring a sense of relief, it can also spark a period of self-discovery. Take time to reflect on your strengths, challenges, and unique qualities. Use this newfound awareness to explore how ADHD has shaped your life and identify strategies to thrive moving forward.

Building Self-Esteem

Women with late ADHD diagnosis often battle feelings of inadequacy or a lack of self-worth due to years of struggling with unrecognised symptoms. Remember that your diagnosis doesn't define you; it's a part of your story that can empower you to seek the support you need and deserve. Cultivate self-compassion and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

Seeking Support: Reaching out for support is a crucial step on your journey. Connect with mental health professionals who specialise in ADHD and can provide tailored guidance. Therapy can help you develop coping strategies, manage emotional challenges, and navigate the practical aspects of daily life. I have personally learned a lot of coping skills through social media, especially TikTok from fellow ADHDers. Discovering effective coping strategies is a key part of managing ADHD. Experiment with techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, exercise, and organisation tools. Customising these strategies to your unique needs can enhance your focus, time management, and overall well-being.

Navigating Relationships:

Open and honest communication with loved ones can foster understanding and create a supportive network. Share your diagnosis with those you trust and work together to build stronger connections. Open up to your loved ones about how ADHD presents in you and the struggles but also the benefits (YES THERE ARE SOME!!)

CELEBRATE YOUR BRAIN

  • Charisma and Humor: People with ADHD often have a natural charm, sense of humor, and an ability to make others feel comfortable in their presence.

It's important to recognize that the advantages of ADHD can vary widely from person to person, and not everyone will experience these strengths. Additionally, while these advantages exist, it's also important to acknowledge and manage the challenges associated with ADHD through appropriate support, strategies, and treatments.

Empowerment Through Education: Educate yourself about ADHD, its symptoms, and available treatment options. Knowledge is a powerful tool that can empower you to make informed decisions about your health and well-being. Seek out reputable resources, support groups, and communities where you can connect with others who share similar experiences.

Embracing the Journey: Remember that a late ADHD diagnosis is the beginning of a new chapter in your life. Embrace the journey with curiosity and determination. As you implement strategies, seek support, and nurture self-compassion, you'll find the strength to overcome challenges and harness your unique strengths. A late ADHD diagnosis can be a transformative moment that leads to greater self-awareness, growth, and empowerment.

Remember that you're not alone, and your journey is an opportunity to embrace your true potential and grow.

Whats personally helped me:

- Reflect on how my ADHD has manifested as a child and as a teen *whilst trying not to dwell*.

- Allowing myself to express my anger when it boils up, I love boxing, brief burts of running or painting; both whilst listening to 2010 emo music (DON'T JUDGE UNTIL YOU TRY IT).

- Creating art work which resonates with fellow ADHDers and building a community full of acceptance and understanding - I created t-shirts and stickers available on my shop

I hope the post has brought validation or just some warm feeling which makes your day a little brighter!

Till next time xox
